An eToken is a secure electronic prescription token, usually sent by SMS or email. It can be presented or forwarded to a pharmacy that supports electronic prescribing, allowing patients to choose the pharmacy that best suits their location and circumstances.

For some patients, that may mean a local pharmacy in Sydney. For others, it may mean arranging dispensing through a pharmacy that can support delivery. The eToken does not guarantee that every pharmacy can supply every medicine. A pharmacy still needs to confirm that it can dispense the prescription, meet any relevant regulatory requirements and arrange stock where necessary. However, it gives patients greater visibility and a clearer starting point for discussing their dispensing options.

This matters because prescription care is not only about the appointment itself. Patients may want to ask about pharmacy location, delivery availability, dispensing fees, current stock or how a repeat prescription will be managed. With an eToken, the prescription can be sent to a preferred pharmacy rather than leaving the patient uncertain about the next step.
